Christian wows the crowds
At the London Saatchi Gallery
Wow ! what an evening, what an event, and 'Christian' was there, sharing the fun and excitement of the life of a lion in Chelsea, all be it in wonderful Derek Cattani photographs.
This year’s biggest London Art event, was undoubtedly the Art of Giving Charity Launch at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, and the Christian prints were the star of the Exhibition, with some 40 prints on show in the huge Gallery 7, in aid of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust and the Elsa Conservation Trust.
The event kicked off London Art week in the most spectacular fashion, with more than 1800 people attending the 7th. October opening night, As the champagne launch kicked off, many high-profile guests from the worlds of film, music and fashion & sport began to arrive.
There was hardly an inch of space in the `Christian the Lion gallery` as it was named, where photographer Derek Cattani and Christian’s co-owner John Rendall were on hand to talk of their memories of Christian in Chelsea and all of his antics & fun moments.
Also giving their support was John’s daughter singer-song writer Tallulah Rendall who sang songs from her next album which will be released in March 2011.
Her music was interpreted by the graceful movements of the award winning `Worlds best pole dancer` an interesting combination and a first in the Saatchi gallery, which left the gathered crowds astounded by the balletic movements.
The 6 months of hard work preparing for the event really paid off, Derek and John, having selected some 40 of the very best photographs from Christian’s first days in 1970 at Sophisto-Cat in Chelsea London, through to the famous reunion in Kora Africa with John & Ace the following year, and all beautifully framed by Susie Lipman of Oberon Art and the mouldings supplied by possibly the best company in its field, Arqadia frames and mouldings.
There were many unseen photos specially reserved for the Saatchi Gallery, and one in particular of the last photo ever of, George Adamson & Christian in the Kora reserve in 1973 was taken by George Adamson’s assistant and now Field Director of the George Adamson Trust, Tony Fitzjohn.
This print fetched £1,000 at the live Auction which was organised by Bonhams and presided over by auctioneer, the ever persuasive Lord Archer.
The `Christian the lion Gallery` had a special edition sale of the beautifully framed prints, which were printed by the leading Giclee printer in the UK, `Brandammo`, with a certificate signed by both Derek Cattani and John Rendall. The ’sold’ red dots appeared as if a rash on the tags, and the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust was the recipient of a substantial amount of funds from their sale.
The new, exclusive prints have now been added to the `Christian the Lion Prints` collection, and a big thank you, for all your interest and charitable help with the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust.
